Social and political upheaval inevitably elicit powerful transformation in culture and the arts. We’re in that place now, and we need to remember there have been not-so-long-ago precedents to bolster and encourage us. Literary historian Malcolm Cowley wrote of the years between World Wars I and II as “a second flowering of American writing.” Writers like William Faulkner, Katherine Anne Porter and Eugene O’Neill represented a changing of the guard, ushering in a sea change in the substance and language of literature that would clear the way for an even more experimental generation of writers like Allen Ginsberg, Joseph Heller, Mary McCarthy and Tennessee Williams in the post-war years.

As we begin the autumn of 2020, we enter the close of a calendar year that’s been life-altering and devastating for so many around the globe. Artists have been and will continue to be processing and interpreting the upheaval we’re living through. The photos and films we’re producing now, and in the years ahead, will change photography. We want to say: Allow yourself to feel this uncertainty and record the enormity of these historic days. The art you produce will be the beginning of a once-in-a-generation movement in photography.
