Get the light right: On camera speedlight modifiers for photographers

diffusers for speedlights

I have purchased many speedlight modifiers over the years and there are a lot of great options that will help you create the look of softer light. I own a couple of the modifiers listed below and from experience, they all do a pretty great job.  When photographing wedding couples and seniors, I find soft lighting to be quite consistent with my style. Depending on your style of shooting and the look you are after, I am sure there is a perfect one for you. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount

This was the very first modifier I bought when I first learned how to use my speedlight. Its collapsible design makes it very easy to keep in your camera bag and pull out quickly. It can attach to just about any flash (it has a strap with hook and loop fasteners) and has a dome on the top. The dome can be used as is or inverted depending on the type of light output you are after. It also comes with an optional gel system so that you can change the temperature of the light. $59.95

2. ExpoImaging Rogue FlashBender 2 Softbox Kit

The FlashBender comes in multiple sizes and I personally have the large size. I love this modifier because you can literally bend the panel to position your light how you would like. It attaches with a belt and buckle and it packs completely flat. It is easy to pull out and attach quickly. Another great thing is that it comes with a silver/black attachment so that it can be used as a reflector as well. It is one of my favorite modifiers. Starting at $49.95

3. RoundFlash Magnetic Ringflash Adapter

If you love the look of ringflash, this modifier is a great option. It has many online reviews that talk about how great this product is at creating an even spread of light and the ringflash shaped catchlights. It attaches to most lenses and camera bodies and has a mirrored interior. It is collapsible, lightweight and comes with a carrying pouch. $113

4. Fstoppers Flash Disc

This diffuser folds very small to fit not only into your camera bag, but it can fit into your pocket as well. My favorite thing about this modifier is that it has a grey card on the back to help you set exposure and white balance. It fits all speedlight models from any manufacturer. It is just under 12 inches in diameter and folds down to fit into a convenient 4-inch pouch. $49.99
