During the summer months, I take my kids swimming multiple times each week. I love keeping them busy with something they really enjoy. This year, I want to try and photograph them more from in the water. I haven’t made the leap and purchased full underwater housing for my Canon 5D Mark III yet, but there are some great alternatives for underwater cases for phone cameras. If I don’t have my ‘big’ camera with me, I use my iPhone 6 to take images of my kids. I always have it with me, so it is the perfect companion for the pool along with one of these underwater cases.
1. Watershot Smart Phone Housing
When I came across these underwater housing kits, I immediately loved the options available. There are multiple options for both iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones. Depending on the model you choose, the depth rating goes to 195 feet. It includes two lenses (one flat and one 110 degree wide angle), is touchscreen compatible above water, includes a custom app and buttons to optimize the camera and video options, and has an integrated universal tripod mount. Starting at $99
2. Lifeproof Case
Lifeproof phone cases are one of the most popular phone cases on the market. They are great for protecting your phone against not only the water, but also sand or any other elements. The Lifeproof case is perfect for swimming pool photos because it’s maximum depth is 6.6 feet. It has an anti-reflective optical glass camera lens with a sleek design. You can even get a built in battery charger (available this June). Available for iPhones, Samsung and Motorola phones. Starting at $79
3. i-Divesite i-Pix Housing
I love to scuba dive and it only makes sense that our camera phones are becoming more popular to use while diving as well. Looking at phone cases that are made specifically for deep underwater photography is a great way to find some options for the beach or pool this summer. The i-Pix housing has a maximum depth of 180 feet and not only protects your iPhone (or Samsung Galaxy phone) but it is optimized for image clarity. Starting at $119.99
I am not sure that I want to take the plunge just yet for underwater housing for my DSLR…so these options are perfect for me to “test the waters” (hardy, har, har! :)) of underwater photography before committing to expensive housing. Thank you so much for this reveiw, Rachel!
