Photo essay: A song for Greece

The Greece I grew up in is a place of simple but profound beauty, rich history, home of myths, mysticism, and music. The people are proud, kind, loud, welcoming, generous, and warm. The Greece I know gave us the gods of Mt. Olympus, the Iliad, and the Odyssey. It birthed the first philosophers and was the genesis of theater.

Greece has been in the forefront of international news for some time now. The financial crisis the country is experiencing is quite unique and unprecedented from an economic standpoint, provoking a flood of debate and speculation regarding debt management, politics, and the domino effect that may be triggered throughout Europe as the country unravels.

As I struggle to keep abreast of new developments through friends and family that are directly affected, and strive to answer well-meaning questions coming from all directions, I feel profoundly sad that this is what Greece has been reduced to.

When my children think of Greece, I want them to remember the bluest sea they have ever seen; warm sand between their toes. I hope they can recall the simple pleasure of an island breeze; the smell of freshly baked bread and the wondrous sight of brilliant purple flowers cascading down the sides of white village houses. I want them to yearn for the sweet taste of bougatsa; friendly old ladies dressed in black; singing and line dancing in tavernas. Most of all, I want them to remember a family that is not afraid to hug, laugh loudly, or love passionately.

As the world debates, discusses, and speculates on the financial outcome of this very small country, my fear is that its very large soul is being forgotten.

I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and came to the United States to attend Wellesley College in MA. I pursued an acting career that brought me to the Actor’s Studio in NYC. I now live in Brooklyn, NY with my incredible husband, Justin, and three wonderful children, Cecilia, Willow and Finny. I have been eager to tell stories through art my entire life, and my theatrical background greatly informs my photography. I am interested in capturing human connection and soul. The subtlety of a look, the gentleness or sensuality of a touch, the visceral love communicated in a myriad of ways through our body language. The focus, abandon or vulnerability we experience when we are lost in a moment, unaware that anyone is looking. Connection is what drives and fuels us and soul is all we have left when everything else is stripped away. I also love creating conceptual, creative, fine art images, because I believe in the power of ideas and fantasy. Imagination is a strong emotional and therapeutic creative outlet. A source of comfort, solace and a means to escape.

  1. Dear Melina, your photos always motivate me, charge me with positive emotions, give me the strength to work and continue to write creative essays. I have been writing essays on various topics for many years, and I have already faced a creative crisis several times, but only your work motivates me to continue writing essays, articles, and research papers for students at a high level. Thank you very much!
