Q: WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT THE WINNING PHOTO?
Alyssa Ahern: My eye was immediately drawn to the subject doing a cartwheel across the big open space. I just adore how the light frames the subject so perfectly. The composition is really appealing and makes you want to stare and linger for a while. I also love the warmth of the sunset and the dramatic sky. The silhouette adds to the whole image by giving it drama, but I also feel a sense of hope in this image even though it is so dark. The photo is beautifully captured and wonderfully exposed.
April Vargas: What draws you into this image is the sense of wonder. It captures the playful essence of childhood. The drama that’s created by the use of backlighting and scale really bring this image to life. I love how Hannah used movement, the dramatic sky and the sliver of light to convey the emotion in this image.

Q: WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS PHOTO?
Alyssa Ahern: The light and shadow play in this image are phenomenal. I really love the center composition and framing, as well. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I can relate to slowing down enough to enjoy your food or drink. All the little components of this image really add to the overall story of relaxing and taking time for you.
April Vargas: I love this still moment captured by Mindy. At first glance you notice the subject engaged in her morning routine before the day unfolds, but the deeper you look you see the focus of this image lands on the items left on the table, leaving the viewer to think of the lives lived in the home. The use of directional light really brings the shadows and emotion to the forefront and amplifies the story.

Q: WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS PHOTO?
Alyssa Ahern: When I first saw this image, I was immediately intrigued by the intricate light and shadow play and thought, “how?” The little details that are left in the light help paint a beautiful picture of a mother nursing her child, which I relate to right now as I am a nursing mom myself. I love the little details you can spot in the faces and just how peaceful this feels. I can truly feel the love the mom has for the child as she nurses. Beautiful storytelling and shadows.
April Vargas: I love how this image pulls you into this quiet moment shared between mother and child. You can feel the strength and tranquility in this image, the giving of love and comfort with touch and nourishment. I love how Shannon uses the light coming through the curtain, leaving the beautiful designs illuminating their silhouettes in the room.
