Photo branding we love: Dreams of a forest

Photographer: Jayme Ford, The Paper Deer Photography, Red Deer, Alberta

What has inspired your brand? I am a huge explorer and the majority of my sessions are in the Rocky Mountains so I wanted to keep with the nature theme, hence all the foliage.

Did you start your business with a solid brand, or did it develop over time? It was definitely a work in progress over the years. I found I gravitated to a bunch of different styles of photography and branding so mine was kind of just all over the place; some vintage elements, some modern elements, a huge mish-mash of styles that was never cohesive. I had a website by Portfoliositez and a blog by Pro Photo and they were totally different. I honestly never sent anyone to my website because I felt it took away from the talent I was trying to put forth to my clients. I finally bit the bullet in 2012 and hired a website designer, One Plus One (amazing designers!) to custom build one for me. It was a ton of work but once it was completed I felt a HUGE sense of relief and an incredible new amount of pride in my own work.

Describe your style in three words: Honest, organic, emotive

How has your brand helped your business? I think having a consistent, cohesive brand really helps people feel confident that they are hiring a professional. It also lets them get to know my personality a bit more through my website.

Do you feel like your brand attracts your target market? 100 percent. I think most every client who books with me does so not only because my branding speaks directly to who I am as an artist but also as a person. Which in turn attracts my ideal clientele, those who appreciate the art of photography and aren’t just looking for a deal.

What advice would you give a new photographer about branding? Plan what you like before buying products. Really sit down and figure out what you want your brand to say and how it can reflect your personality.
