It’s just what I need as I move from “practice sessions” to charging what my photos are worth. (It’s not easy, but you’ve given me the exact boost I need!)

I’m so grateful there are great articles like this and facebook groups, etc, where photographers encourage each other to raise the standard.

Exactly! People feel like they can barter or ask for discounts because we run a one-person business, and that maybe since they went to high school with us, or that they followed a referral, that they’re doing us a favor and deserve a discount.

What I continuously find fascinating is that someone will rarely question or try to negotiate a doctor fee or salon fee…yet photography is simply something that one can barter for. Why? I am not selling real estate (unless you factor in the space on your walls where canvases will hang), so why is the public negotiating our profession as such? Hmm…

Thanks for reading and commenting. I was half afraid people would react negatively, but so far the response has been that others totally agree. I think most of us have all been there – it’s tough because people assume if you charge ‘a lot’ that you’re being greedy. Nope, I just respect my time and talent (finally!).

But of course the reality is that others ARE charging too low prices, so you need to count on losing most quotes, once you charge proper prices.

That does not matter. What matters is that you DO get enough of them to turn a profit. So whether you lose 90% doesn’t matter. How many are in the 10% is what matters!

Michael
PS my prices are going up again shortly.

I changed my prices but need to find a way to find my target market. I’m afraid to lose my current clients but I want to run my business the right way so it benefits myself and my family. It’s such a huge leap!

I now do IPS and I KNOW that because I charge a premium, the service and care that I am allowed to give my customers is such a better experience for them but it also pays me what I’m worth. And I am worth it 🙂
