The Sigma Art 35mm rarely leaves my camera, especially when I’m photographing my children indoors. One of my favorite things about this lens is that it’s fast, and this is because of the hyper-sonic motor. With three little active boys running around I need to have a fast lens.
Another reason it’s a personal favorite is its ability to work well in low light situations. Low light is one of my favorite types of light. I’m able to shoot wide open at 1.4 or close to wide open with my children, and focus is often spot on and sharp. The Sigma Art 35mm is by far my sharpest lens. With the 1.4 capabilities I can keep my ISO low and avoid grain in low light situations. Its shallow depth of field also beautifully isolates my subjects from the background.
Shooting at 1.4 typically produces gorgeous bokeh with the Sigma Art 35mm, especially when my subjects are backlit. I’m often drawn to color in my work and the Sigma Art 35mm produces gorgeous, rich color. One of the many reasons I love using it.
I often photograph detail shots with this lens as well. Since it’s a wider angle I’m able to get close to my subjects if need be. This is another reason I replaced my nifty fifty with this lens. It works well in tight spaces. Since my house is an old farmhouse that was built in the 1920’s, majority of the rooms are closed off and small. The 35mm allows me to capture my boys easily within these rooms.
Even though the lens has a multi coating to protect from flare. I’m still able to capture gorgeous flare in the right situations… that is if you like that sort of thing that I do. In most situations though this lens is not going to produce flare. The Sigma Art 35mm focuses well in backlit situations even when shooting directly into the sun. As far as physical characteristic of this lens, it’s incredibly solid and durable. I often use manual focus in backlit situations and the focus ring is smooth and easy to use.
The Sigma Art 35mm, like most prime lenses, does have some vignetting especially when shooting at 1.4. This is of course easily removed in post processing. It also has very little barrel distortion unlike many of its 35mm competitors. What little there is again can be fixed in post processing.
Overall the Sigma Art 35mm is an incredible lens. For the past year this has been my go-to lens. I think where it exceeds its competitors the most is it’s ability to work fast and capture incredibly sharp images even wide open at 1.4. This lens works well in all types of situations.

I am renting this lens today and I am excited to play around with it this weekend and use it for a newborn shoot next week! I’ve heard so many great things about it!
Do you have problems with autofocus when doing backlit pictures?
Such beautiful photos! Which camera body do you shoot with?
Hi Meg! Your photos are gorgeous! I have the same lens and love it but when I am editing in Lightroom I notice a green tint and desaturation in my photos. Do you experience this with your lens at all?
